What is NeoForge?

NeoForge is a community-driven modding API for Minecraft, serving as a successor to the long-standing Minecraft Forge project. It provides the essential framework that allows complex mods to interact with the game, enabling features like new blocks, items, biomes, and gameplay mechanics. NeoForge maintains a high level of compatibility with the modding ecosystem while focusing on modern development practices and community-led updates.

NeoForge vs. Forge

While NeoForge shares a lineage with Forge, it is a separate project. When choosing a mod loader for your server, it is vital to check which loader your chosen mods require. Most modern mod packs are migrating to NeoForge, but older packs may still rely on legacy Forge versions. Always verify the mod author's requirements before installation.

Installing NeoForge on your Server

On AwakeNode

AwakeNode makes managing your server type simple. You can switch your server to NeoForge using the Version Changer in your control panel. Once selected, our system automatically configures the necessary environment. If you need to add mods, use the Mod Installer to quickly upload and manage your files directly through the browser without needing an SFTP client.

On other hosts / manually

  1. Download the correct NeoForge installer for your Minecraft version from the official NeoForge website.
  2. Run the installer locally to generate the necessary server files.
  3. Use an SFTP client (such as FileZilla or WinSCP) to upload the neoforge.jar and the libraries folder to your server's root directory.
  4. Rename your neoforge.jar to match the startup filename required by your host (often server.jar).
  5. Restart your server to complete the installation.

Performance and Memory

NeoForge servers can be resource-intensive, especially when running large mod packs. If your server crashes due to memory exhaustion, you may need to upgrade your hosting plan. On AwakeNode, upgrading your plan automatically updates your Xmx memory allocation, requiring no manual configuration. If you require specific JVM startup flags or custom garbage collection settings to optimise your modded environment, please open a ticket with Support, as these settings are managed by our administrators to ensure server stability.
