What it means
On a modded server, players need the same mods as the server. When they don't match, joining fails with one of:
- Mismatched mod channel list (Forge, NeoForge)
- Incompatible FML modded server
- Disconnected: mod rejections with a list of mods
- Fabric: "This server requires [mod] to be installed" or a list of mismatched mods
The message usually lists the mods that are missing on one side or have different versions.
The fix
- Same loader and Minecraft version. A Forge player can't join a NeoForge server, even with the same mods.
- Same mods, same versions. Compare the player's
modsfolder with the server's (in the Files tab). Every mod that adds content must be on both, with matching versions. - Server-only and client-only mods are fine to differ. Performance mods like Lithium or FerriteCore can be on just the server; shaders and minimaps on just the player.
Make it easy for everyone
Use a modpack. If your server runs a pack from Modrinth or CurseForge, players install the same pack in their launcher (Modrinth App, CurseForge app, Prism Launcher) and everything matches.
If you've built your own mod list, put it in a modpack with the Modrinth App or Prism Launcher and share it, so players get exactly what the server has.
Questions
Which mods must players have?
Anything that adds blocks, items, mobs, dimensions or new mechanics. If you're unsure, the join error lists the ones that don't match.
Can players have extra mods?
Client-only ones, yes (shaders, minimaps, performance mods). Extra content mods usually stop them joining.
