Forge vs. Fabric vs. NeoForge: Which Mod Loader Should You Choose?
Confused by mod loaders? We compare Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge to help you choose the right one for your Minecraft server on AwakeNode.
Understanding Mod Loaders
Choosing the right mod loader is the first step in customising your Minecraft server. Each loader has a different ecosystem, performance profile, and compatibility list. On AwakeNode, you can switch between these loaders instantly using our Version Changer.
Forge
Forge is the industry veteran. It offers the largest library of legacy mods and is ideal for massive, content-heavy modpacks. Because Forge is feature-rich, it can be more resource-intensive than other loaders.
Fabric
Fabric is a lightweight, modular loader designed for speed. It updates very quickly when new Minecraft versions release, making it the go-to choice for players who want the latest features immediately. It is generally less demanding on server resources, though it requires specific Fabric-compatible mods.
NeoForge
NeoForge is a community-driven fork of Forge. It was created to provide a more modern, stable, and open development environment. Many newer modpacks are transitioning to NeoForge, making it a strong choice for modern server projects.
How to Install Your Mod Loader
On AwakeNode
- Navigate to your server's Version Changer in the panel.
- Select your preferred loader (Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge) and the desired Minecraft version.
- Click 'Install' or 'Switch'.
- Use our Mod Installer to add your mods directly through the browser without needing to manage SFTP.
On other hosts / manually
- Download the correct server jar from the official loader website.
- Upload the jar to your server via SFTP.
- Rename the file to match your host's expected startup filename (e.g.,
server.jar). - Manually upload your mods to the
/modsfolder. - If you need to adjust startup flags to accommodate specific loader requirements, contact your host's support team, as these are often locked for stability.
Performance and Support
Regardless of the loader you choose, performance depends heavily on your server's RAM allocation. On AwakeNode, upgrading your plan automatically scales your memory (Xmx) without requiring manual configuration. If you experience performance issues or crashes, our Support team is available to help diagnose if the issue stems from a specific mod or a need for more resources.
