Distant Horizons
See farther without turning your game into a slide show
Distant Horizons is an optimization and utility mod designed to significantly increase your render distance by generating a low-detail LOD (Level of Detail) world. It allows players to see much farther across the map without causing the performance drops typically associated with high render distances.
This mod is available for Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge, supporting Minecraft versions from 1.16.3 through 1.19.3. It is an excellent tool for players who want to explore vast landscapes while maintaining a smooth frame rate.
Installing Distant Horizons
On AwakeNode
- Navigate to your server in the AwakeNode Panel.
- Use the Mod Installer to search for 'Distant Horizons'.
- Select your preferred loader (Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge) and click 'Install'.
- Restart your server to apply the changes.
On other hosts / manually
- Download the correct version of Distant Horizons from Modrinth for your specific loader and Minecraft version.
- Access your server files via SFTP or the File Manager.
- Upload the downloaded .jar file into your server's
modsfolder. - Ensure you have the corresponding mod loader installed on your server, then restart the instance.
Common issues
- Version Mismatch: Ensure the mod version exactly matches your server's Minecraft version (e.g., 1.19.2) and loader (Fabric/Forge/NeoForge). Using the wrong file will cause the server to crash on startup.
- Missing Dependencies: Some versions of Distant Horizons may require additional library mods. Check the Modrinth page for required dependencies.
- Client-Side vs Server-Side: While Distant Horizons is primarily a client-side mod, ensure your server environment is compatible if you are using it in a modpack context.
Performance
Distant Horizons is highly efficient, but generating LOD data for a large world can increase CPU and disk I/O usage during initial exploration. If your server experiences lag while players are exploring new chunks, consider upgrading your plan to provide more resources. On AwakeNode, your RAM (Xmx) will automatically scale with your plan, ensuring the server has enough overhead for modded operations. For other hosts, ensure your startup command includes sufficient memory allocation to handle the increased data processing.
