What it does
Citizens creates NPCs: characters that stand around, look at players, walk paths, and run commands when clicked. Other plugins build on it for shops, quests and guards.
Citizens is paid on SpigotMC. Free development builds are linked from the Citizens website for servers that want them.
Install
Put the jar in plugins and restart. Use the build for your Minecraft version: Citizens is version-sensitive, like most plugins that create entities.
Basic commands
| Command | Does |
|---|---|
/npc create Bob | Creates an NPC called Bob where you stand |
/npc select | Selects the NPC you're looking at |
/npc skin Notch | Gives it a player's skin |
/npc lookclose | Makes it turn to face nearby players |
/npc type ZOMBIE | Makes it a zombie (or any mob) instead of a player |
/npc moveto or /npc tphere | Moves it |
/npc remove | Deletes the selected NPC |
Make it do something when clicked
/npc command add warp spawn
The command runs when a player right-clicks the NPC. Add -p to run it as the player (so permissions apply) instead of as the console:
/npc command add -p warp spawn
Common problems
NPCs disappeared or errors after a Minecraft update: update Citizens to a build for the new version. NPCs are saved in plugins/Citizens/saves.yml and come back once Citizens loads.
Skins don't show: skins are fetched from Mojang, which can be slow or rate-limited. Wait a minute, or use /npc skin --url with a skin image link.
Players can't click NPCs: another plugin (a protection plugin or anti-cheat) may be cancelling the interaction.
Performance
A handful of NPCs is nothing. Hundreds of NPCs walking around, or NPCs with constant look-close in busy areas, add up. Keep busy NPCs to what you need.
Questions
Is there a free version?
Citizens is paid on SpigotMC, and its development builds are free on the Citizens website.
Can NPCs fight?
With add-ons such as Sentinel, yes: guards that attack mobs or players.
