ViaVersion
Allow newer Java Edition clients to connect to older servers.
ViaVersion is a utility plugin that allows players using newer versions of Minecraft Java Edition to connect to servers running older versions. It supports a wide range of server software including Paper, Fabric, Velocity, BungeeCord, Sponge, and Folia.
By bridging the gap between client and server versions, ViaVersion ensures your community can join regardless of their game client version, maintaining accessibility for your player base.
Installing ViaVersion
On AwakeNode
- Navigate to your server in the AwakeNode panel.
- Click on the Plugin Installer tab.
- Search for "ViaVersion" and click the Install button.
- Restart your server to complete the installation.
On other hosts / manually
- Download the latest ViaVersion jar file from the official Modrinth page.
- Access your server files via SFTP or the File Manager.
- Upload the jar file into the
plugins(ormodsfor Fabric) folder. - Restart your server to load the plugin.
Common issues
- Protocol Errors: If players receive protocol errors, ensure you are using the latest version of ViaVersion compatible with your server's base version.
- Plugin Conflicts: Some gameplay-altering plugins may not support cross-version play. Check the console for errors during startup.
- Outdated Server: ViaVersion cannot fix issues if your server core itself is severely outdated or incompatible with your Java version; ensure your server type is up to date.
Performance
ViaVersion is generally lightweight, but it does perform packet translation for every connected player. On high-player-count servers, this can result in a slight increase in CPU usage. If you notice performance degradation, monitor your server's tick rate. Note that RAM allocation is managed automatically on AwakeNode; if you require more resources due to heavy plugin loads, you can upgrade your plan at any time. For other hosts, ensure your startup command is correctly configured to provide sufficient memory for your player base.
