ViaBackwards
Allow older Java Edition clients to connect to newer servers.
ViaBackwards is a utility plugin that allows players using older Java Edition clients to connect to newer Minecraft servers. It acts as an add-on to ViaVersion, bridging the gap between legacy versions and your current server environment.
It supports a wide range of loaders including BungeeCord, Fabric, Folia, Paper, Sponge, and Velocity, covering client versions from 1.10 through 1.13.2.
Installing ViaBackwards
On AwakeNode
- Navigate to your server in the AwakeNode panel.
- Use the Plugin Installer tool to search for "ViaBackwards".
- Click Install. The panel will automatically download and place the plugin in your plugins folder.
- Restart your server to apply the changes.
On other hosts / manually
- Download the latest ViaBackwards jar file from Modrinth.
- Connect to your server via SFTP or use your host's File Manager.
- Upload the jar file into your server's
pluginsfolder. - Restart the server. Note that you must have ViaVersion installed for ViaBackwards to function.
Common issues
- Plugin not loading: Ensure you have installed ViaVersion, as ViaBackwards is an add-on and will not function independently.
- Connection errors: Verify that your server version is compatible with the ViaBackwards version you have installed.
- Missing features: Some features from newer updates cannot be backported to older clients; this is a limitation of the Minecraft protocol and not the plugin itself.
Performance
ViaBackwards runs primarily on the server's CPU to translate packets between client and server versions. While generally lightweight, having a large number of players on older versions may increase CPU usage. If you notice performance degradation, ensure your server is running on a high-performance plan. As memory (Xmx) and startup flags are managed by the host, if you require further optimization, please contact AwakeNode support for assistance.
